Versatility
Bamboo is a very tolerant plant; it can withstand cooler temperatures even though it is thought of as a tropical plant and can also tolerate areas of poor soil making it easy to grow in all types of places as different types of bamboo (Hunter, 2003). Because of bamboos unique structural design and different types of growth bamboo makes it a very resourceful plant all over the world and therefore is known for its versatility and readiness in the industrial world (Austin & Ueda, 1970; Birkeland, 2002; Simpson & Ogorzaly, 2001; Howell, 2009; Hunter, 2003, p 321; Liese, 1985; Lye, 2010; Sarkisian, Long, Doo, & Shook, 2011; Waite, 2009).
“It is the most universally useful plant known to man. For over half the human race, life would be completely different without it” (Austin & Ueda, 1970, p. 9). Because of this bamboo products are very popular in many countries some products are even first choice because of the bamboo material (Hunter, 2003). Bamboo is used as construction material, household items like furniture and flooring, it is even used in the textile industry to make natural fabrics (Austin & Ueda, 1970; Birkeland, 2002; Howell, 2009; Hunter, 2003; Lye, 2010; Mahdavi et al., 2011; Sarkisian et al., 2011; Simpson & Ogorzaly, 2001; Waite, 2009). Bamboo’s sturdy yet pliable structural system makes it a very reliable tool but not only is bamboo strong and flexible, “in all types of bamboo, the most striking characteristic is immense vitality. Bamboo, it seems, can overcome almost any kind of hardship” (Austin & Ueda, 1970, p. 16; Howell, 2009; Sarkisian et al., 2011, p. 61). Because of bamboo’s vitality and strength it has gained a role in construction (Howell, 2009; Sarkisian et al., 2011).
